M daughter has a vaio VGN-fw21L, that was playing up.  She tried to do a complete restore using the rescue discs.  On her first attémpt she found she only had 1 disc so she aborted.  She found the other discs but now as soon as she clicks that she understands it will wipe all data she gets a message of error 414.

She has also tried restoring using the restore partition but the laptop freezes, which is the original problem she was having.

Could this be a HDD failure.  I am away at present so i am getting as much info from her via facebook, not ideal but am trying to help her out.

Thanks

paul

    Hi paulpies84.

Error 414 when using Recovery Discs indicates that the disc is dirty, scratched or otherwise faulty.  Sometimes copying the discs on another computer can help.

However, has she tried a recovery directly from the Recovery Partition by tapping F10 during startup - when you see the Vaio Logo?  Have a look in the Recovery Guide on Page 33 here: -

    ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/manuals/RecoTS/2008Q3_TRG_EN.pdf

Use the options 'Recovering your computer when you cannot start Windows/To Recover your computer from the Recovery Partition' and use the 'To restore your entire computer system'.

It is, of course, possible that the underlying cause is a hardware fault with the hard drive or corrupted system software - but try the above first.

It soundS rather like the hard drive may be faulty.

Try tapping F2 at startup when you see the Vaio Logo.  This should display the BIOS screens.  Is the Hard Drive recognised by the System or does it say it is not present.

    1) Switch on the computer or laptop then log on as an admin.

    2) Click on the Start button then select Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and after that click System Restore.

    3) Inside the next window, click on “Restore my system to an earlier period” and then press Next.

    4) Choose the latest restore point within the “select a restoration point” list, and then click on Next.

    5) Then click ‘Next’ in the verification screen.

    6) Reboot the laptop or computer when the restoration is done.
